The use of hedges in your garden has numerous advantages. They can be used to create privacy in your garden; as dividers to create different areas in your garden; to muffle noise and act as a windbreak; to create mazes; to attract birds and butterflies to your garden; to hide ugly walls; to improve your security around your home and garden; and to act as a green background for other plants in your garden. Hedge plants are relatively cheap and low-maintenance.
The maintenance required once you have planted your hedge plants, involves pruning when the plants are still small. This will encourage the plant to grow dense. You also need to pinch the tips, while the plants are still actively growing to promote the growth of side shoots.
If you want to plant a hedge for security – along your border walls – you can use a paper flower bougainvillea (bougainvillea glabra), num-num (carissa bispinosa) or natal plum (carissa macrocarpa).
Other plants that can be used as security measures include aloes, cacti, agaves, and any other plant that has thorns.
The landscaping experts at Kingfisher Landscaping design and implement exceptional and beautiful gardens in a professional manner and can provide the home owner with any exterior decorative feature. We pride ourselves in providing our clients with excellent, efficient and comprehensive service. Flapjack Kalanchoes (kalanchoe luciae) are ideal decorative plants to be displayed in one of our stunning Cubedec steel pots, manufactured by our in-house décor company, Badec Bros Deco. Flapjack kalanchoes are succulents, which mean that they require very little maintenance. Their fleshy, paddle like green leaves, with red edging, make them perfect feature plants. The more sunlight, the deeper the red on the leaves will grow.
Pot – or container – gardening is a very low-maintenance way of creating a garden and is also ideal for small areas. Another advantage to pot gardening is that you can bring the outdoors indoors.

If you want practical exterior space for entertaining and relaxation, which is strategically enhanced by focal features and feature plants, a minimalist garden is the answer. Minimalist design is based on immaculate and elegant lines and features, and requires low maintenance. This type of garden features more hard landscaping and decorative features, than plants.
Minimalist plants that we typically use include bold, sleek feature plants, such as aloes, succulents and trees with an orderly appearance, such as leopard trees. Groundcovers, such as mondo grass, diamondias and rock roses are also perfect for the minimalist garden. Adding water to the overall garden design will augment the end result and convey a soothing ambience.
Hard landscaping features to be utilized in a minimalist garden include water features, sculptures, trellises, wooden decking, cobble lines, stepping stones, cement screed blocks, feature walls, garden benches and other exterior décor. Different textures will add dimension to the garden lay-out.
Our in-house décor company, Badec Bros Deco, can manufacture any type of trendy exterior décor that your heart desires. Badec Bros Wooden Decking, our in-house wooden decking company, is a highly professional and qualified company, fit to install your wooden decking in a variety of wood types with a range of stylish finishes.
The key recipe is to marry the feature plants and hard landscaping features to create a neat, aesthetically pleasing unit.
Ultimately, the garden design of a minimalist garden should harmonize with the architectural style of the home and with the tastes of the home owner.

What sort of benefits or assistance do you expect to get from a landscaping service. Well, that’s going to depend on the company you contact. There are some companies who claim to offer landscape services and when push comes to a shove, all they are actually offering is to cut your grass, tidy up leaves and weed the garden. There are, of course, plenty of services that a good professional company can offer. One of those landscaping services is consultancy. Often, property owners do not know exactly how they want their garden to look like. Sometimes, they do not even know what plants to grow! To solve these problems, one can hire landscape consultants to advise on what to do. Normally, the consultants arrange a visit to the property to observe. After a few days, they can visit the owner and submit to him some recommendations that may include a new garden layout design.
Other landscaping services include removing unwanted weeds, shrubs, trees and other vegetation, site clearance, removal of old fences, pathways, buildings and concrete. Hardscaping includes rockery works, pond excavation and construction, patio and terrace construction, pathway and driveway layout and fence layout. This service also aids in the construction of garden buildings such as pagodas, sheds and pump stations. Garden landscaping service also includes plant care. The contractor regularly visits a property to take care of the plants. Maintenance of the plants usually involves trimming and pruning, weed and pest control and irrigation. To find out how Kingfisher can help you, give us a call.

Gardening is a practice that goes far back into history. Ornamental gardens were known in ancient times, a famous example being the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, while ancient Rome had dozens of gardens. It is the practice of growing plants for their attractive flowers or foliage, and of growing vegetables or fruits for consumption. It is an activity restricted to humans that is used to produce edible foods and plants to beautify the interior and surrounds of a home. Gardening can incorporate the planting and maintenance of extensive landscapes such as are seen in many 18 th Century European homes, or it can be as small as the planting of a couple of window boxes. It can be extremely hard work, involving many gardeners, or it can be a pleasing pastime involving just an hour or two a week.
Gardening can bring you a great deal of peace, tranquility and satisfaction. It exposes us to the wonders of science and nature. We learn to appreciate the lifecycle of plants. We get to see and observe how an ecosystem works within our own garden. It teaches us how to respect the sanctity of life and nature. Gardening has a calming effect on people from all walks of life. Sitting in the surrounds of a tranquil garden can help you forget about the stresses of life. Whether you are growing plants in containers or in the confines of a large garden, the satisfaction you get when you pick your first rose or dig up your first potato is second to none.

2.4 PermaStrip™ Range
This range, sold exclusively by Kingfisher Landscaping and Badec Bros Deco in Southern Africa, is employed to shape absolutely straight lines or slightly curved lines in your garden design.
PermaStrip is a range of strong, yet flexible L-shaped strips designed with maintenance in mind and is mostly used to accentuate perimeters around buildings, and lawn areas, which need maintenance. The L-shape ensures trouble-free installation, because any collection of material, such as gravel, can be installed over the top of the horizontal bottom part. This ensures that the strips are twice as secure as they would be, were one only using the patented sliding connection system, which effortlessly aligns and joins the strips during installation.
This patented product is manufactured of engineered commercial aluminium alloy and is available in a Mill Finish (light grey), as well as, a Black Duraflex finish and in the following dimensions:
*0.32cm (Wall Thickness) x 8.89cm (Wall Height) x 2.54cm (Base)
*0.48cm (Wall Thickness) x 8.89cm (Wall Height) x 2.54cm (Base)
Another advantage to the rigid L-shape design of PermaStrip, is that the wall of the adjoined strips will not become unstable and untidy with time.
No stakes are required for installation of this product, as the gravel, or other material, will keep it anchored to the ground. PermaStrip brings effortless design and flexibility into the hardscaping aspect of your landscaping design.

Edging is a hardscaping method used in landscaping design to form a division between surfaces, such as flower beds and lawn areas. It can be utilized to create interesting shapes throughout your garden, not only to form the perimeters of your beds, but also to fashion abstract textured lines to add a modern touch to your garden.
Cobbles are used most frequently as edging in landscaping design by Kingfisher Landscaping. One really has a diverse choice of cobbles, as they come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. You will certainly find a cobble to suit both the design of your garden, as well as, the architeture of your home.
The use of cobbles in the lay-out of your garden neatly demarcates and accentuates the different zones and also serves to make maintenance of your garden easier.

Do you enjoy beautiful flowerbeds? One thing you can do is to implement ground cover plants that would cut down on weed development, thus saving you time on having to pull weeds. You can also use wood chips, barks and colored stones to fill in the exposed areas to cut down on weed production. With all the new tall grasses that are on the market today, you could also choose several of them to add to your landscaping. If you would like to have a lot of flowers growing in your garden, you might want to consider planting plants that are perennials. That means they would come back every year. This would save you from having to go out and shop for new flowers every spring and then take the time to prepare the soil which would include fertilizing, tilling and what ever else would be required for the particular plants that would be incorporated into your scheme.
