Liesbeth Badenhorst is a director of Badec Bros Landscaping (Pty) Ltd trading as Kingfisher Landscaping. She manages the company’s buying department and is in charge of quality and project management. Liesbeth has been in the landscaping industry for over 25 years. She started her career in landscaping at a commercial landscaping company, as a site manager. With all the experience she accumulated she founded Monitor Gardens in 1990. After 5 years she closed Monitor Gardens due to worker related issues. After 4 years’ experience in other landscaping companies she was appointed as one of the directors of Kingfisher Irrigation cc. (Kingfisher Landscaping) in 1999 which has been built up to one of South Africa’s leading landscaping companies. Her abilities and experience in project management, time management and people management have earned her a high reputation in the landscaping industry.

She is the passionate, positive and motivated mother figure of our company. With her management skills, our goals and vision are in our grasp. Her dream is to see the family business succeed by all means possible and to leave a legacy for all her grandchildren and generations to come.

PERMALOC STEEL EDGING – ProLine™ Range

Permaloc steel edging is an exciting new product which we are importing form the United States of America. Our sister company, Badec Bros Deco has exclusive buyers’ rights with this company and is therefore the only supplier of this novel range of products in Southern Africa. Permaloc manufactures top quality aluminium landscape edging products, which were designed by landscape architects.

We utilize these trendy products as hardscape features to define flower beds and lawn areas. Because these products are all very easy to install, we are currently experiencing that it will take a 10′th of the labour and time to install, as opposed to other edging materials. Another positive aspect is that it can be moved easily, as garden beds are changed or moved. This range, sold exclusively by Badec Bros Deco in Southern Africa, comprises of commercial calibre aluminium and is employed to shape elegant curves and oblique lines in your garden design. ProLine is exceptionally flexible and is therefore ideal to use as a hardscaping feature in landscaping and garden design. ATTRACTING BUSH BABIES TO YOUR GARDEN

You are not only limited to attracting butterflies and birds to your garden. You can also creating an inviting habitat for our indigenous old world monkey, the Lesser Bushbaby (Galago moholi).

The presence of these cute, furry and saucer-eyed nocturnal mammals will only enhance the quality of your outdoor living area.

The first thing to consider when planning on inviting bushbabies to your garden is your pets. If you have dogs or cats, it might not be such a good idea, as you might be luring the bushbabies to a certain death.

Seeing as these little nocturnal pro-simians are indigenous, you will need to plant indigenous plants in your garden to create the perfect environment for them. Take into consideration what they need in terms of food, water, nesting and safety. I suggest you conduct intensive research on these tiny furry creatures to be able to ascertain what their needs will be.

Firstly, bushbabies are arboreal, which means they spend most of their time in trees. Therefore you will have to plant some large trees in your garden. They are omnivorous and eat tree gum – from acacia trees – flowers, fruits and insects, such as moths, beetles, butterflies, grasshoppers and even small reptiles, such as lizards. They are not dependant on water, but it would be a wise idea to provide a safe watering spot for them in your garden.

You can entice them to stay and breed in your garden, by providing a nesting log or box for them. In nature, they will nest in the hollow of a tree. Bushbabies normally give birth to one or two offspring and sometimes even up to three babies.

Finally, please keep in mind that these animals are wild and you should not try to keep them as pets. Be satisfied with providing a habitat for them in your garden, where they can exist in peace and are free to roam as they want.

ATTRACTING BUTTERFLIES TO YOUR GARDEN

Attracting butterflies to your garden is as easy as planting indigenous, flowering plants in your garden. The first step you will need to take in creating a butterfly friendly garden is to conduct research on the endemic species of butterflies in your region. From there you will be able to determine which plants you will have to incorporate into your garden design, which will provide food and shelter for the butterflies that you wish to attract.

Some common plants that are inviting to butterflies include wild irises (dietes grandiflora and dietes bicolour), Blue Freylinia (freylinia tropica), Honeybells (freylinia lanceolata), Cape Honeysuckle (tecomaria capensis) and Cape leadwort (plumbago auriculata). Adult butterflies feed on nectar and their larvae – caterpillars – feed on the leaves of larval host plants.

Butterflies are attracted to colour, so make sure that you plant flowering plants, which are on your endemic butterflies’ menu. Your lay-out should be carefully thought through, as these dainty and pretty insects love sunny areas. Therefore, you will have to plant your butterfly-attracting plants in sunny areas. Naturally, you will have to research the needs of the plants, to ensure they will thrive in the sun. Butterflies also need water, so it would be a good idea to create an area for them to drink from.

Finally, it is important to avoid pesticides as much as possible, as this will harm not only the butterflies, but also their offspring – caterpillars. Not only will attracting butterflies to your garden add life and beauty to your garden, but you will also be contributing to conservation, as you will be restoring the balance of the ecology in your garden. And, sadly most of our indigenous butterflies are endangered. Butterflies are essential role players in pollination.

DRAINAGE IN GARDENS

Appropriate drainage in a garden is of utmost importance; otherwise you will end up with muddy areas in your garden, rotting plants or even worse, damaged house and wall foundations.

Soil types, such as clay soil, will certainly cause drainage problems in your garden, as it tends to retain water. A shallow water table on your property will also create drainage problems. You can check for poor drainage on your property by looking out for wet patches or puddles of water on the ground.

The first technique you can use to improve the drainage in your garden, entails removing the first 15cm of topsoil and replacing it with more soluble soil.

Another technique which can be used – and which is not as intensive – is to create different levels in your garden area. You can either arrange a slightly sloped ground level in your garden, or you can shape your garden areas in such a way, as to create channels to carry the excess water away.

A third technique involves installing a French drain. This entails creating a type of underground sieve, by digging a trench and filling it with loose debris, like excess building materials or pebbles. This sieve should be covered by a strong steel grid and a layer of top soil of about 15cm thick. The ideal place to create this sieve would be at the lowest part of the garden, where most of the water gathers.

You can also utilize a poorly drained area by having your landscaper design and create a large pond.
