You should carefully consider the selection of plants for your garden, in order to ensure that you do not plant invasive alien plants. These are plants that are not indigenous to South Africa. They tend to grow faster than our indigenous plants and can easily take over. They also take up precious water, nutrients and light which is more needed by our native plants.
Many of us have invasive exotic plants in our gardens, such as lantana, pipe grass, cat’s claw creepers, privets (ligustrum robustum privet), water hyacinths and wattle, jacaranda, pine and seringa trees. Rather opt for indigenous plants in your garden.
Indigenous gardens are not only less expensive, water wise, hardy and proudly South African, but also very versatile. You have thousands of indigenous plants to choose from, which means you can design your garden in a variety of styles, ranging from tropical to bushveld. Another advantage to indigenous gardens is that you will attract birds, insects and animals to your garden; creating your very own ecosystem in your backyard. You will also be contributing to the preservation of our indigenous plants.
Typical indigenous plants that we use include tree aloes, cape aloes, marlothii aloes, honey suckle, clivias, agapanthus, arum lilies, bulbines, wild garlic, acacia trees, olive trees, white stinkwood trees, and indigenous grasses, such as three awn grasses, thatching grass, buffalo grass, broad-leaved turpentine grass, bristle grass, Natal red top grass, red grass and fountain grass.

Gardening is a practice that goes far back into history. Ornamental gardens were known in ancient times, a famous example being the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, while ancient Rome had dozens of gardens. It is the practice of growing plants for their attractive flowers or foliage, and of growing vegetables or fruits for consumption. It is an activity restricted to humans that is used to produce edible foods and plants to beautify the interior and surrounds of a home. Gardening can incorporate the planting and maintenance of extensive landscapes such as are seen in many 18 th Century European homes, or it can be as small as the planting of a couple of window boxes. It can be extremely hard work, involving many gardeners, or it can be a pleasing pastime involving just an hour or two a week.
Gardening can bring you a great deal of peace, tranquility and satisfaction. It exposes us to the wonders of science and nature. We learn to appreciate the lifecycle of plants. We get to see and observe how an ecosystem works within our own garden. It teaches us how to respect the sanctity of life and nature. Gardening has a calming effect on people from all walks of life. Sitting in the surrounds of a tranquil garden can help you forget about the stresses of life. Whether you are growing plants in containers or in the confines of a large garden, the satisfaction you get when you pick your first rose or dig up your first potato is second to none.

Dead leaves do not have to be an irritation during autumn and winter. You can utilize dead leaves and other decaying plant materials in your garden by creating a compost heap. By doing this, you will be creating your very own circle of life in your garden. You can feed the plants in your garden and in your home with your own home-produced compost. You will also save money. You can even add kitchen waste, such as potato and carrot peels, rotten veggies and the like to your compost heap. This will also reduce the amount of refuse ending up in landfills, which costs money and ultimately encourages global warming.
Producing your own compost is a cheap, therapeutic and natural manner of feeding your garden. By working compost into your garden, you will enhance the nutrient contents in your soil; create an insulating layer in your soil, which will prevent moisture loss and protect the roots of your plants from extreme heat or cold; and you will encourage a healthy ecosystem in your garden.
