CONTEMPORARY CREATIONS

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

The superlative landscaping experts from Kingfisher Landscaping created this phenomenal garden, reflecting a contemporary minimalist style. At the front door of this beautiful home, the landscapers constructed a unique water feature by placing three steel tubes into a square concrete basin. This feature was strategically built in a circle of lush, green jaburans, which create an interesting contrast against the clean look the rest of the garden displays. Three Mosaic circles placed against the wall perfectly complement the silver colour of the steel tubes, and playfully reflect the natural light. In the front garden, the experts from Badec Bros Mosaic created the phenomenal mosaic mural. The circular mirrors in this work of art reflect the circular shapes of the three mosaic features that are placed against the front door, as well as the steel tubes of the water feature. Two beautiful, well-established aloe bainesii were planted as feature plants to flank the mosaic mural. The circle of jaburans was hemmed in by a double cobble line, filled with arrabella rock, creating an interesting effect.

The Kingfisher team went on to construct a seligna wooden deck around the swimming pool, and laid down a matching footpath consisting of seligna stepping blocks leading towards the Koi pond. Four feature walls were built at the bottom of the deck and painted in a bright red to act as a distinctive water feature. Luxuriant bamboo was planted behind these walls to create a soft and contrasting backdrop. Cobbles and gabion baskets filled with arrabella rock were used to create neat borders and provide the garden with interesting lines. The experts planted plump grey rock roses next to the path leading towards the Koi pond to add some appealing texture to this exquisite garden.

The walkway, layered with seligna stepping blocks and over-shadowed by bright red steel hoops, leads one from the pool area to the Koi pond and the rest of the garden. In the background, the team constructed two more feature walls and tiled them with red mosaics. This feature mirrors the bright red walls of the water feature at the swimming pool.

In the foreground, the Kingfisher landscaping experts created a large, circular dry bed that perfectly complements the abstract theme this garden holds. Tiling the boundary wall with mirror mosaic tiles, this look fashions a strong contrast to the plump, prickly succulents such as the euphorbias, golden barrels and aloes planted in the dry bed. In the background, a triangular Koi pond was built and tiled with mirror mosaic tiles, falling in sync with the overall theme of the garden, and above the pond the team constructed an interestingly shaped wooden deck as a relaxing seating area.

Whether it is landscaping, installations of Koi ponds, water features, wooden decking, garden illumination, swimming pools, irrigation or the inclusion of mosaics in the garden – Kingfisher Landscaping will always define your exterior lifestyle in a stylish fashion.

PETS AND GARDENING

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Pets and gardening do not always go hand-in-hand.  Some believe it impossible to harmonize your dogs or cats and your garden, and that you have to choose between having a pet and having a garden.  This is not necessarily true.  It is very possible to synchronize the two.

When you have your garden lay-out designed, keep your pets in mind.  For instance; ensure that you have high enough walls or fencing – with no large gaps – around your property to prevent your dog from pulling a Houdini on you.  Dogs love patrolling the perimeter of their territory – your garden – so make sure that you do not plant sensitive or valuable plants along the borders of your garden.  You can either lay down a strip of paving, gravel, pebbles or stepping stones or you can plant a topiary top-hedge to soften the wall, which will be out of reach of padding paws.  You can also plant creepers against your wall, which will give you more privacy and soften your borders.

A chief reason for dogs digging up a garden is boredom.  Make sure your dogs get plenty of stimulating exercise and that they have a wide selection of toys around the garden to keep them occupied.

When you lay out and plant your flower beds, you can either construct raised flower beds, or create borders around your beds, using decorative wooden fencing, which will dissuade your pets from having a romp among the roses…You can also lay down a layer of hard mulch, to discourage your pets from exploring the plant beds, depending on the type of plants you plant in your flower beds.  Hard mulch includes gravel and chunky quartzite rock, which is also decorative.

You can guarantee your pets’ health and happiness by planting non-toxic plants; using organic pest repellent and creating areas where they will have access to both sunny and shady spots.  Try to leave as much space as possible for them to run around in, without risking getting up to mischief.

When you plant delicate seedlings, you need to be extra careful about getting them demolished by exploring dog paws.  You can either demarcate the area for a while, until the seedlings have had a running start, or you can apply a very effective home remedy…

This remedy consists of dry flour, mustard powder and cayenne pepper.  All you need to do is add equal parts of these three ingredients together and sifting the deterrent around your seedlings.  You will need to re-apply your concoction after you have had rain or very windy weather.

Finally, you should also keep in mind the type of lawn you have planted in your garden.  Some dogs are allergic to kikuyu lawn.  Evergreen lawn might yellow in spots where your female dog urinates.  In our opinion, LM lawn would be your best bet.

If you do not really want or need your dog in a specific part of your garden, you can create a partition, using a fence or even a decorative gabion wall to keep your moggies out.  Then you will be able to create a delicate garden, without having to worry about your canines causing havoc among the daisies…

CUBEDEC MOSAIC POTS

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Cubedec Mosaic Pots, created by our sister companies, Badec Bros Deco and Badec Bros Mosaic, are manufactured out of 1,6mm mild steel sheets with an inner steel frame comprising 3mm x 30mm steel angle iron for extra strength and support.  All our pots are manufactured with a round inner steel bar to support plastic planters, which come standard with all our pots, unless otherwise specified.  You can choose between three finishes for the inner frame of your custom-made mosaic pot:  rusted, mild steel finish, or powder coating in any colour you can dream of.  This is merely to protect the steel frame of your pot from rusting.

Once the basic steel pot has been constructed, we complete the pot by adhering mosaic tiles onto the steel sides.  We can cover the entire pot with glass, marble or ceramic tiles, or we can only tile the borders with mosaic.  It is completely up to you.

Our range of Mosaic Pots can be customized to any size, and can even be manufactured with adjustable legs as an optional extra.  Cubedec drip trays are also available as elective add-ons and can also be tiled with mosaic.  Please tell us about your ideas and we will bring them to life.  You dream it, we make it!

INFORMAL GARDENS

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

An informal garden can be defined as “organized chaos”.  These gardens are inclined to be much more natural and don’t follow rigid design lines.  Plant lines and borders are more natural and fluid.  Nature is pretty much left to take its course.

Plants typically used in an informal garden include a variety of trees, shrubs, creepers, perennial plants, ground covers, decorative grasses, et cetera.  These are planted en masse.

Hard landscaping features suitable for an informal garden include understated water features, ponds, pathways, garden benches, sculptures, pots, pergolas and trellises.

Our in-house exterior décor company, Badec Bros Deco can design and manufacture a wide selection of trendy décor pieces for your garden; ranging from stylish pots, water features, sculptures, customized garden gates, trellises, pergolas, sculptures and the like.

Ultimately, the garden design of an informal garden should harmonize with the architectural style of the home and with the tastes of the home owner.

MODERN GARDENS

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

With Badec Bros Landscaping, trading as Kingfisher Landscaping, being such a contemporary landscaping company, which continuously keeps up with international standards and trends, most of our garden designs are very modern.

A modern garden design incorporates trend-setting design ideas and state-of-the-art landscaping products.  Modern gardens tend to have clean lines running through the entire garden.

Neatly demarcated “rooms” and borders can be created by using cobble stones, stepping stones, screed blocks and short, fluffy plants.

Texture and layers can be included into the garden design by using different materials, varying from chunky arrabella rock (quartz dump rock), to plump succulents, spiky aloe’s, fluffy sedges, and hardscaping features, such as raised plants beds, terraces, water features, koi ponds and wooden decking.

Tree aloes (aloe bainesii) – Africa’s largest aloes – have a striking, sleek appearance and will perfectly complement a modern garden as feature plants.  There are many stunning plants to be used as focal points in the contemporary garden.

Trendy exterior décor products are also often used to complement and round-off a modern garden design.  Our in-house garden décor company, Badec Bros Deco, can create a wide range of exciting décor products to enhance the overall beauty of the garden.

Ultimately, the garden design of a modern garden should harmonize with the architectural style of the home and with the tastes of the home owner.
