The Working for Water programme – introduced through the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry – is a staunch fighter against alien invasive plants in South Africa. It is estimated that around 10% of our country is covered with approximately 9000 species of alien invasive plants, which steal water, nutrients and sunlight from our native flora.
The Working for Water programme was initiated in 1995 and has since then cleared out more than a million hectares of alien invasive plants. It works in conjunction with the Departments of Agriculture, Trade and Industry, and Environmental Affairs and Tourism, as well as, local governments and communities. Around 20 000 people are trained and provided with jobs every year, due to the Working for Water programme.
This programme uses four methods of clearing and controlling areas which have been invaded by alien plants, namely mechanical (felling, burning and removing), chemical (environmentally safe herbicides), biological (species-specific diseases and insects), and integrated methods, which combines all of the above.
You can do your share of working for water in your own garden, by planting only indigenous gardens and by employing environmentally friendly measures in dealing with pests and diseases on your plants.
A water wise garden consists of plants that do not require a lot of watering. These plants are normally indigenous plants, which can survive on rainfall and do not need additional watering. Succulents are also very water wise plants and look beautiful when planted in masses.
Hard landscaping features, such as sculptures, trellises, wooden decking, cobble lines, stepping stones, cement screed blocks, feature walls, garden benches and other exterior décor will decorate your garden and requires no water. Different textures will add dimension to the garden lay-out.
By reducing your lawn area, you will also save on water. Mulching – layering bark chips, hay, pebbles or grass cuttings – will keep the soil around your plants moist for longer periods and therefore require less watering.
When you have a drip-irrigation system installed, you will also save water. You can set your irrigation system to water the garden at certain times of the day, such as early morning, when the sun will not just evaporate all the water.
Even weeding regularly will make your garden water wise, as all these unnecessary plants also use a lot of water.
By using organic fertilizers in your garden, you will be applying responsible measures to ensure that your plants are healthy and grow to their best potential. You will also be contributing to the fight against soil and water table contamination.
Organic fertilizers, for instance raise the nutrient content in your garden soil, which feeds your plants and assists the roots of your plants in getting optimal nutrition from the soil. The three most important nutrients needed by your plants are phosphor, potassium and nitrogen.
Another advantage of using organic fertilizers is that it enhances your soil composition and improves water retention, which in turn does its part in combating drought.
By using organic pesticides in your garden, you will be applying responsible measures to ensure that garden animals, birds, insects, reptiles and amphibians will not suffer poisoning. You will also not harm your pets and you will be contributing to the prevention of soil and water table contamination.

There are two main methods which you can use to plant your plants into our exclusive range of Cubedec steel décor pots, manufactured by our sister company, Badec Bros Deco. You can either plant indirectly in plastic liners or stackers, or you can plant directly.
Firstly, we can customize your Cubedec pot according to three different sized plastic liners. The sizes available are 25cm, 32cm and 55cm in diameter. We can construct circular rims in your steel pot to ease the adding and removing of the plastic liners. Therefore, you can change the plants in your pots at any time without any hassle. Alternatively, we can customize your steel décor pot to suit a square stacker, measuring 28cm in diameter.
For direct planting, we fabricate a 3cm lip at the bottom of the pot and lay a steel plate over that. Then we drill holes in the steel plate to enable ventilation. This steel plate also forms the base for your plants. Firstly, you need to lay down a layer of gravel to facilitate drainage. Then you can fill your pot with potting soil and plant your selected plant into the pot.
In the past we have constructed a 1m³ gabion basket, which we planted with trees. We lined the sides of the basket with weed guard cloth to prevent weeds from sprouting and growing.

Cubedec Mosaic Pots, created by our sister companies, Badec Bros Deco and Badec Bros Mosaic, are manufactured out of 1,6mm mild steel sheets with an inner steel frame comprising 3mm x 30mm steel angle iron for extra strength and support. All our pots are manufactured with a round inner steel bar to support plastic planters, which come standard with all our pots, unless otherwise specified. You can choose between three finishes for the inner frame of your custom-made mosaic pot: rusted, mild steel finish, or powder coating in any colour you can dream of. This is merely to protect the steel frame of your pot from rusting.
Once the basic steel pot has been constructed, we complete the pot by adhering mosaic tiles onto the steel sides. We can cover the entire pot with glass, marble or ceramic tiles, or we can only tile the borders with mosaic. It is completely up to you.
Our range of Mosaic Pots can be customized to any size, and can even be manufactured with adjustable legs as an optional extra. REMEMBER that Decorex Johannesburg 2009 will be running from 6 to 10 August 2009 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.
This is the 16th year of Decorex Johannesburg and the 9th year that Kingfisher Landscaping will be exhibiting our landscaping design prowess at this prestigious design expo. Our sister companies, Badec Bros Deco, Badec Bros Wooden Decking and Badec Bros Mosaic will also be displaying their individual artistic ideas and products, in conjunction with Badec Bros Landscaping, trading as Kingfisher Landscaping.
Kingfisher Landscaping will be strutting their stuff with ground-breaking landscaping design. Badec Bros Deco will be flaunting their trendy ranges of interior and exterior décor products, such as steel pots, sculptures, trellises, pergolas, gabion walls and classy benches. Badec Bros Wooden Decking will be showing off with their professional and elegant wooden decks, in all shapes, sizes and finishes. Badec Bros Mosaic, trading as Magnum Opus Mosaic, will be showing off with their chic and sophisticated mosaic art.
The theme for this year’s expo is New Fusion and aims to promote environmentally friendly designs and products. Our innovative and inspiring stand will be in Hall 3.
