INDIGENOUS GARDENS

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Indigenous gardens are not only less expensive, water wise, hardy and proudly South African, but also very versatile.  You have thousands of indigenous plants to choose from, which means you can design your garden in a variety of styles, ranging from tropical to bushveld.

Another advantage to indigenous gardens is that you will attract birds, insects and animals to your garden; creating your very own ecosystem in your backyard.  You will also be contributing to the preservation of our indigenous plants.

Typical indigenous plants that we use include tree aloes, cape aloes, marlothii aloes, honey suckle, clivias, agapanthus, arum lilies, bulbines, wild garlic, acacia trees, olive trees, white stinkwood trees, and indigenous grasses, such as three awn grasses, thatching grass, buffalo grass, broad-leaved turpentine grass, bristle grass, Natal red top grass, red grass and fountain grass.

Ultimately, the garden design of an indigenous garden should harmonize with the architectural style of the home and with the tastes of the home owner.

Formal gardens are rich in classic elements and structured lines.  Plants typically used for formal gardens include, buxus hedges, topiaried trees, roses, lavender, maple trees, silver birch trees, conifers and poplar trees.

Classic garden benches, pergolas, trellises and water features also play a very important role in formal garden design.

COURTYARD GARDENS

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

A courtyard can be transformed into a soothing and delightful haven by having it landscaped.  Done correctly you can create an illusion of more space, yet retain a feeling of conviviality.

Because space is normally limited within a courtyard, you need to give the design a lot of forethought.  Attention to detail is very important.

Firstly, you will have to decide to what purpose the courtyard garden will be used.  Do you merely want a decorative garden, to be admired from afar, or do you want an inviting garden, perfect for entertaining guests?

One should also consider the existing features in the courtyard, such as the walls.  Design the garden around these features and include them into the design, if you can.

Each plant and feature must be decided on beforehand.  You will also have to consider the amount of sunlight in the area, with regard to your plant choices.

Trellises are great features to include into a courtyard garden.  They can be used to soften a wall or even to create “rooms” within the courtyard, if you have enough space.

Pot or container planting is also ideal for courtyard gardens.  Our sister company, Badec Bros Deco, manufactures stunning mild steel Cubedec pots, which will complement any garden design.  This innovative company also manufactures trendy benches, trellises, pergolas, sculptures, feature poles, gabion pots, mild steel feature walls, wooden screens and many more exterior décor pieces.  Any of these pieces are perfect to be used in a courtyard garden.

Ultimately, the garden design of a courtyard garden should harmonize with the architectural style of the home and with the tastes of the home owner.

BALINESE GARDENS

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Balinese garden design stems from the styles of the gardens of Bali, with a modern and Western twist.  Balinese gardens typically have a plethora of tropical plants, such as bamboo, palms, cycads, frangipani, hibiscus and other lush and flowering plants.

You can enhance the Balinese theme in your garden by incorporating Eastern décor pieces, such as Balinese lanterns, statues, decorative pots, trellises, thatched pergolas and relaxing water features.

Exterior lighting can be used to highlight focal points in the garden at night and to encourage nocturnal entertaining.

You can have a pergola constructed in your garden and thatch it in a shaggy style, to blend it in with the Balinese theme.  A pergola such as this, will not only look beautiful and inviting, but will also provide you with additional entertainment or relaxation space.

Umbul umbuls (lengthy, tapered banners) can also be brought into the overall garden design.  Vibrant coloured umbul umbuls will bring a splash of colour to your exterior living space and can be used as focal points.

By adding a water feature, such as a pond or a fountain, to your garden, you will augment the Balinese theme and have a relaxation factory in your garden.  Water is a very soothing and life giving medium, which makes it a great de-stresser.

Bamboo trellises or screens can also be added to your garden to act as focal points and to disguise any unsightly aspects around the house, such as air conditioning units and garbage disposal areas.

The landscaping experts at Kingfisher Landscaping is fully able to design and implement exceptional and beautiful Balinese gardens in a professional manner.

Our sister companies, Badec Bros Deco, Badec Bros Wooden Decking and Badec Bros Mosaic make it possible for the Badec Bros brand to offer a comprehensive service to our clients. MODERN GARDENS

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

With Badec Bros Landscaping, trading as Kingfisher Landscaping, being such a contemporary landscaping company, which continuously keeps up with international standards and trends, most of our garden designs are very modern.

A modern garden design incorporates trend-setting design ideas and state-of-the-art landscaping products.  Modern gardens tend to have clean lines running through the entire garden.

Neatly demarcated “rooms” and borders can be created by using cobble stones, stepping stones, screed blocks and short, fluffy plants.

Texture and layers can be included into the garden design by using different materials, varying from chunky arrabella rock (quartz dump rock), to plump succulents, spiky aloe’s, fluffy sedges, and hardscaping features, such as raised plants beds, terraces, water features, koi ponds and wooden decking.

Tree aloes (aloe bainesii) – Africa’s largest aloes – have a striking, sleek appearance and will perfectly complement a modern garden as feature plants.  There are many stunning plants to be used as focal points in the contemporary garden.

Trendy exterior décor products are also often used to complement and round-off a modern garden design.  Our in-house garden décor company, Badec Bros Deco, can create a wide range of exciting décor products to enhance the overall beauty of the garden.

Ultimately, the garden design of a modern garden should harmonize with the architectural style of the home and with the tastes of the home owner.

LANDSCAPING SERVICE

Monday, July 6th, 2009

What sort of benefits or assistance do you expect to get from a landscaping service. Well, that’s going to depend on the company you contact. There are some companies who claim to offer landscape services and when push comes to a shove, all they are actually offering is to cut your grass, tidy up leaves and weed the garden. There are, of course, plenty of services that a good professional company can offer. One of those landscaping services is consultancy. Often, property owners do not know exactly how they want their garden to look like. Sometimes, they do not even know what plants to grow! To solve these problems, one can hire landscape consultants to advise on what to do. Normally, the consultants arrange a visit to the property to observe. After a few days, they can visit the owner and submit to him some recommendations that may include a new garden layout design.

Other landscaping services include removing unwanted weeds, shrubs, trees and other vegetation, site clearance, removal of old fences, pathways, buildings and concrete. Hardscaping includes rockery works, pond excavation and construction, patio and terrace construction, pathway and driveway layout and fence layout. This service also aids in the construction of garden buildings such as pagodas, sheds and pump stations. Garden landscaping service also includes plant care. The contractor regularly visits a property to take care of the plants. Maintenance of the plants usually involves trimming and pruning, weed and pest control and irrigation. To find out how Kingfisher can help you, give us a call.

LANDSCAPING PROJECTS

Monday, July 6th, 2009

At any one time there are hundreds of landscaping projects going on in different parts of the world. These can range from creating a new city park, to school gardens, industrial or commercial estates and even something as mundane as digging and landscaping a new drainage trench. Naturally big companies usually undertake large projects, but there are many smaller schemes that can be undertaken.

There are plenty of smaller landscaping projects that can be undertaken by the homeowner though, whether he carries out the work himself or engages professional landscapers to do the job for him. The sort of landscaping projects that you can carry out yourself include:

• Garden fences
• Retaining walls
• Ornamental water features
• Rock gardens
• Wooden decks
• Patios
• Garden lighting
• Irrigation
• Raised beds
• Flower beds
• Swimming pools

Some of the larger projects listed here can naturally only be carried out with the help of a professional team of landscaping workers, but some of the smaller tasks can give immense satisfaction when completed by yourself. Whether your home needs a complete garden makeover, or just some smaller task such as the installation of solar lighting, we will be happy to discuss the job with you and give you a quotation for its undertaking. Our workers are all highly skilled and their sole objective is the satisfaction of our clients. We are a service orientated company that always puts the client first.
