Hints and Tips

Here are some tips for that perfect landscaping project

Identify a focal point in your planting to draw the viewer’s attention.

Don’t mix too many elements – stick to a single theme.

Don’t use elements too similar in colour, shape, size or form. Introduce variation to add interest, but avoid conflict within the combinations you choose.

Repeat shapes and forms for continuity.

Use plants in groups of a single variety ( rather than mixing them up) to create a simple, dramatic effect.

Use plants suited to the conditions where they will be planted. If water is not abundant, try to find drought – resistant varieties.

Add water to soften the effect of hard lines.

Decorex Johannesburg 2008 – The Stands

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

The Decorex Johannesburg 2008 Show celebrated its 15th birthday this year and Kingfisher Landscaping has been exhibiting there for the past 8 years. This year we had two stands.

The main stand, exhibiting our landscaping, wooden decking, mosaic and Cubedec steel pots, was in the link between Halls 2 and 3. Our Badec Bros Wooden Decking team constructed two large wooden deck wheels. In each wheel we placed four wedge-shaped lime green Cubedec steel pots (created by our Badec Bros Deco team), containing a towering Poplar tree each, to fill the inner circle of the deck wheel. Around each Poplar tree, we planted a lush border of Varigated grasses. A solid circular wooden deck was placed in between the wheels and right in front of the larger than life, mosaic art work of Marilyn Monroe (measuring 4×3meters), which formed the impressive focal point to this striking exhibit. This mosaic was flanked by imposing diamond-mesh steel frames. A custom-made raw steel bench was placed on the middle deck, which formed another noticable hub to the display.

An undulating line of wooden planks was positioned around the three wooden decks, and a sea of soft Mondo grasses was planted around the entire exhibit to round it off.

Our second stand, displaying our Badec Bros Decor line, consisting of Cubedec steel pots and gabion baskets, was in Hall 4. We created a striking backdrop to the stand by painting vertical bars in three different shades of pink. Black Cubedec steel pots and rusted gabion baskets were displayed in straight lines, from tall to short. These lines were interwoven with feathery Mondo grass, as well as, wooden decking, constructed by the Badec Bros Wooden Decking team. We filled the gabion baskets with brown pebbles and planted large cacti (related to the Golden Barrel) in the Cubedec pots.
